Things to do in Cambridge for a cracking Christmas

@caitlinmoran says “Why don’t we knock Xmas 2020 on the head – then have a mahoosive, week-long Bank Holiday in summer, when we’ve got the vaccine? Just, for one year only, have a summer Christmas?”

While the idea of eating your Christmas Dinner al fresco sounds lovely, in reality, that isn’t going to happen.

So, what can you do in Cambridge to have a cracking Christmas? Here are our top ideas for activities, events and things to do this Yuletide.

Cambridge has something to offer everyone all year round with, “Tourism generat[ing] over £30 million for the city’s economy.” Christmas is one of the times when Cambridge is at its best.

With something happening nearly every day you’ll be glad to have a rest when everything is closed on the 25th December.

1. Check out Coton Orchard Garden Centre’s singing reindeer!

Coton Orchard Garden Centre on Cambridge Road, Coton, CB23 7PJ is perfect for more than just picking up some greenery for your garden. This Christmas the garden centre has transformed, “Into a winter wonderland, offering everything from real Christmas trees to light up reindeer.” It’s a must-see this December, particularly if you have young children or young family members visiting you.

2. Present shopping at Burghley House’s Christmas shop

Magnificent Burghley House has a spectacular Christmas shop opening on 3rd December daily from 10am until 4pm until 20th December. You will be able to soak up the glorious surroundings of the grand sixteenth-century house whilst picking up some “favourite seasonal gifts, luxury treats and beautiful decorations”.

1. Walk on the beach

Horsey Beach, Norfolk and Walberswick, Suffolk are ‘two of the best winter beaches within driving distance of Cambridgeshire’, says Cambridgeshire Live. What better way to blow the cobwebs away or burn off those extra Christmas calories than by checking out two of the best beaches in the country.

2. Snuggle up watching Christmas movies – in your car!

Drive-In Cinemas have been a long-standing feature of American culture for decades. Just hearing the phrase conjures up images of the 1978 musical Grease starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. This December, indulge in a little Americana by heading over to the pop-up Drive-In Cinema in Trumpington on the 10th and 11th December. With Christmas movie classics like Home Alone, Elf, The Grinch and Love Actually to choose from, it’s the perfect outing to make anyone feel merry.

3. Participate in a Christmas 5K on 12th and 13 December 2020

With all of the overindulgence that Christmas inevitably brings, completing a Christmas-themed 5k might well be the ideal event to have in your calendar. With a sporting event in your diary, maintaining motivation for your lockdown sporting goals and staving off any unwanted pounds becomes a whole lot easier! This virtual Santa Fun Run is a great opportunity to get in the festive spirit and keep fit at the same time. What’s more, you could use the opportunity to raise money for a charity of your own choice. After all, Christmas is a time for spreading goodwill to all men, women and children.

Now that the lockdown restrictions are being eased, there are a huge number of activities and events going on in Cambridge this December. To find out more about living in Cambridge explore the rest of our site.
